Since the British left India in 1947,
Indian writers and film makers have depicted the lives of its peoples
since Independence. In this course we sample some of this enormous
output. We examine the work of writers R. K. Narayan, Salman Rushdie and
Rohinton Mistry, all of whom write in English for an international
audience.
We look at the art films of Satyajit Ray,
as well as some typical mass-culture productions of Bollywood
(Bombay’s Hollywood). We also see some recent commercial films, such
as those by Mira Nair, designed to appeal to the movie fan outside of
India.
Along the way, we can expect to
learn a lot about the post-Independence history – and troubles – of
India, as well as the forces of cultural change. We also consider the position of women in India and the continuing influence of
religion.
